'Count your blessings'

The thing about blessings, they are radically similar to the bright golden sun hiding behind the white, inflated clouds. You aren't aware of it until you squint your eyes to see a yellow glow shining its way through the dimness. You might not be aware of it but it still keeps giving you light, it keeps giving you warmth.

That’s the trick to be optimistic. Squint your eyes, just enough to notice anything that’s giving you joy or light. If you do, you might even learn to be grateful for everything you have instead of yearning for everything you don’t.

Count your blessings isn’t just a cliché line. I mean it might be, but it’s authentic. Knowing what you have, be it materialistic or not and appreciating it with all your heart sure beats pining over something that isn’t yours.

I mean think about it. Would you rather spend your time feeling content or feeling jealous because desires do spark from somewhere? I wouldn’t consider myself a very optimistic person but looking at the bright side when you need to doesn’t hurt.

If you want to be pessimistic about something, now that’s your call. But being happy for having so much when you could have had so little would unquestionably have a higher score.

Sometimes I personally feel, how can people who have so little be so happy? -and this isn’t even an unpopular thought. But this is just another of those trick questions. Blessings are NOT just materialistic. They are emotional and sentimental as well. But the most significant blessing of them all is really knowing and appreciating your blessings.

Till now you must have read a lot of essays and other articles about ‘counting your blessings’ and are probably thinking ‘oh, this is just another one of those’ but maybe change it to ‘well, I might as well start trying to be content and satisfied with everything I am lucky enough to be blessed with, in the first place’.

It’s not the fact that you can see the sunlight clearly but the fact that it exists in the first place that matters- to end this with the metaphor I started it with.
