She was sitting on the couch reading, when she heard eerie sounds. Was someone whispering? She got up putting the book on the couch. She pulled her shirt down and walked towards the sound leading her to her bedroom. There was no one. She was just about to leave thinking she imagined it all but just as she held the door to close it behind her, she heard it again. She pushed the door open. It sounded as if someone was calling out her name.
“Who’s there?” There was no response.
“Is anyone there?”
She heard her name this time. There wouldn’t have been goosebumps on her arms if there was anyone in the house. But she lived alone. So who was there?
“Please come out! Who is it?”
She heard her name yet again. “I can’t see anyone! Who’s there?”
“Can you see me now?”, she heard. She was standing in front of the vertical mirror in her room. But she could see two reflections of herself.
She yelled.
She moved her hand up. Only one of the reflections moved its hand up. The other one was smiling like a Cheshire cat.
She screamed at the top of her lungs. But she couldn’t move.
“Who-who are you?”
“Can’t you see me?”
“Who are you?” she asked again hoping for a better answer.
“Look at me. Look into my eyes”
Well, you’d think she’d have enough sense not to do that. But how else is it going to go on?
She looked into the second reflection’s eyes. They were hers. But younger.
She kept staring. The reflection was of hers, but younger.
“Who are you?”
“You”
She took a step back. One of the reflections took a step back. But the younger one took a step forward.
“Me?”
“Yes, you. Didn’t you get me the first time? What changed? Why are you here now? You made a promise.”
“What?”
“You promised you would never make that mistake again. You told me you’d stay away from them. You told me where you would be, but you were not there. Why?”
She looked freaked out, as you would imagine. She didn’t know what to say.
“Why are you here?”
“To remind you what you gave up.”
“And what’s that?”
“Me”
